The Political Intentions of Arab Sports Journalism Discourse About 2018 World Cup (A Text study of samples from the Arabic Journals)

Abstract

Football is a political tool which nations achieve many goals by it, as the most popular sport; countries are trying to improve their image to the world and are a means of raising many political issues. Politicians and media have used the 2018 World Cup to direct political messages to the world, and the success of these messages has proved that the role of sport is not negligible in guiding public opinion.
The study addresses the political intentions in a sample of Arab newspapers during the 2018 World Cup using the criterion of "Intentionality", one of the seven criteria set by De Beaugrand, in light of other textual criteria: Cohesion, Coherence, acceptability, Informativity, Situationality, and Intertexuality. And explains how those criteria were used to achieve political purposes in press texts.
The study found that the political intentions achieved in the sample of the study are seven intentions, which were characterized by textual standards in varying degrees, all achieved in some texts, and in other texts achieved some, and all worked to support the political objective, as tools used by the sender to achieve his political purpose.
