Abstract

Variations between the translation and its origins have long been the subject of controversy. This problem poses its magnitude in the translation of idiomatic expressions since the difference appears on the socio-cultural level.
This study aims to analyze the obstacles that idiomatic expressions pose in the translation process. We have chosen as support for our study, a work that we have had the chance to translate entitled: "Twenty years that have changed the world ... from Berlin to Beijing" by Tierry de Montbrial.
In this study, we will answer the following questions:
• What are the classification criteria of the selected expressions and the working method used?
• How were the selected idiomatic expressions translated into the Arabic language without losing their meaning?
• What procedures did we use for the transmission of the message?
• How were the obstacles encountered in the search for equivalence of expressions overcome and what solutions were proposed?
