Abstract

In the discourse, we keen to refer to elements already cited to keep the thematic thread in context using cohesion, which, together with coherence, constitute the two fundamental mechanisms of a text. The research aims to present a type of lexical cohesion, called Reiteration, and analyses the semantic relationship between words, the anaphoric or textual relationship, and the pragmatic one. In addition, this contribution demonstrates how the reiteration is not redundancy and how much it is essential to transmit the intention and the message of the speaker through Silvio Berlusconi’s political speeches. The study proves how the various types of reiteration (repetition, synonymy, paraphrase, general word, and inclusion or meronymy) are an effective persuasive means that helps to connect the text, to maintain the topic continuity, and to produce the desired pragmatic effect.
