Abstract

This research focuses on the linguistic and rhetorical structure of Egyptian folk enigmas (ÉFEs) which represent a form of popular literature. This category of enigmas is considered to be one of the means of linguistic communication used between individuals who belong to the same cultural and environmental background.
The main objective of the study is first to define the function of (ÉFEs) which is based on linguistic communication and secondly to carefully explain the linguistic phenomena and rhetorical characteristics that are used in (ÉFEs) such as ambiguity, puns, rhetorical figures.
We say that (ÉFEs) occur through oral or written communication. In addition, we also notice that there is a close relationship between the production of the enigma and the socio-cultural aspects according to each region. Therefore, we put the (ÉFEs) in a descriptive study to show their various linguistic and rhetorical structures that suit the environment of each region in Egypt.
