The Semantics of euphemism in the news section

Abstract

This contribution aims to describe the phenomenon of euphemism in the language of newspapers, especially in the news section. the study aims to(a) identify the semantic fields in which euphemisms are most used; (b)compare the frequency of euphemistic terms with the related forbidden terms to evaluate whether journalists are keen to use euphemistic terms or not; (c) highlight the reason for the use of euphemism. We analyze the articles from the news pages of 'La Repubblica' published from January 10 to April 10 of 2020.
The analysis reveals the prevalence of euphemistic terms in most of the studied semantic fields compared to the forbidden terms; which indicates a tendency for journalists to spread these terms among readers. The most frequent euphemistic terms are those relating to social life, disease, and death. there are few terms relating to the fields of love and sex life, female biology, and bodily activities.
