Abstract

Cairo and Naples, two metropolises, where life flows there from the past to the present full of suffering, but also of hopes. The two cities chosen as the background of the two works studied in this research, are two metropolises with a thousand faces and from a thousand portraits where the common paradigm of the alley of Cairo and Naples, is comparable on the basis of the thematic dimension through a universal writing. Both Mahfuz and Serao wrote the two works starting from a strong inclination to realism that comes from a reality truly lived by the two authors. They intended to hear the cry of their native cities, moved by the miserable lives that their people led, and in fact managed to represent their most intimate side which is still present today.
