The „Message“ of Hunain ibn Ishaq as an authentic documentation of intercultural transfer processes and mirror of the prevailing translation culture

Abstract

The Cultural Turn has opened new horizons in Studies of Translation History, regarding exploring different translation ages from the perspective of cultural transfer. The subject of the study here is the “Resala” of the Arabic physician and translator, Hunain ibn Ishaq, in which he listed the medical writings of Galen from Greek into Arabic or Syriac until his time. This article explores the letter of Hunain in terms of different levels of cultural transfer as distinguished by Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink. It investigates also the features of the prevailing "translation culture” according to Eric Prunč. The results identify different cultural transfer processes, whether at the level of text selection for translation, transfers from one cultural environment to another or various reception practices. The study also reveals some features of the "translation culture" prevalent at that time, such as the cooperation between different partners, loyalty and transparency, but on the other hand it reveals some aspects of authoritarianism
