Context as a frame of reference, the study of two translations of “The Plague” by Camus

Abstract

The context is one of the important criteria that helps the translator arrive at decisions and preferences in order to faithfully convey the original text. The problem lies in identifying the places in the text where there is a great need not to neglect the contextual dimension of meaning in them.
Our study aims to identify specific cases where the translator is required to refer to the context. We chose as subjects for our study two Arabic translations published in 1981 of the novel "The Plague" by Albert Camus, the first by Suhail Idris and the second by Kawthar Al-Behairy.
 The study concluded that the translator is invited to rely on the context, especially in translating the passages that represent the general atmosphere of the novel, those directly related to the description of the epidemic in it, and those that carry the author's ideas about the repercussions of the epidemic.
