The impact of Coronavirus on the press language in 2020-2021 A semantic study

Abstract

This article examines the development of one of the Italian linguistic levels, during the Coronavirus pandemic, the semantic level. In times of crisis, especially the major ones, we often feel that we need new words that accompany the social change that leads to a major linguistic change.
The present study aims to analyze the impact of the Covid-19 on the language of the Italian newspapers in the last two years (2020-2021). The pandemic pushed major Italian newspapers to use words related to the Coronavirus. The newspapers have been affected by such a linguistic change and has borrowed many words from English through the loanword.
The new terminology and abbreviations related to the pandemic will be analyzed, and the new semantics that have occurred to some old words will be studied. In the conclusion, the threat of the pandemic, printed on the pages of Italian newspapers, will be examined.
