Space is a central topic in cultural and narrative theory today, as it helps the novelist to create a context in which actions take place, while it can have a symbolic function if it is used to express an important concept for the story, or for one of the characters. The aim of this study is to move from the basics of narratology and theories of fictional narratives to explore the relationship between sociology and literature. First, we will discuss the fictional representation of the train station and its role in some 19th and 20th novels and short stories; then we will examine how some ideas were taken from the sociological analysis of liquid modernity by sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, as well as the theory of “non-places” by anthropologist Marc Augé, can be applied to analyze the literary function of railway station in Stazione Termini, a short story by contemporary Italian author Fabio Stassi.
