A short story is a literary type that depicts a side of life as an event, a personality or a stimulating strong feeling in an intensive depiction that keeps with the spirit of the age. The author may not care for details, or adhere to the beginning and the end. It may turn around a scene, a psychological case or a specific profile. The short story is based on fundamental principles, including the principle of unity which contain one idea that is dealt with and ended with one goal and in one way. Also, the principle of unity and focus is one of its fundamental characteristics, as long as it addresses a single idea or a specific or partial part of the life of a person. In addition, it takes into account the details of the structure, keeping to the principle of unity and focus, so the details should be part of the overall structure. Moreover, it must also be truthful and thrilling as well as the conflict element is normal.
This research deals with the subject of short story in Chinese literature and Arabic literature, where the axes of research turn around several points. First, it starts with an introduction about the emergence of short story, then its definition according to the viewpoint of writers, critics, till we achieve a common definition of the short story.
The research also deals with the history of the evolution of the short story in Chinese and Arabic literatures and it finds that the short story has gone through periods of recession and prosperity in Chinese and Arabic literatures, in line with the progress of society
Then, the research addresses the technical features of the short story in Chinese and Arabic literatures in the literary fictional works, where it became clear that there is a great similarity in the technical features of the short stories in both Chinese and Arabic creations. For a more in-depth study, we have chosen a model of Chinese and a model of Arabic tales for both the Chinese writer Luchon and the Egyptian Youssef Idris, to highlight the technical features of the short story. It is found that there is a match between the two works to a great extent and that they reflected the technical features of the short story. The research ends with a conclusion that explains the findings of the research.
