Abstract

The Paratext is a term which suggested by Gerard Genette in 1987 to refer to all added written material included in a book that does not count as the primary narrative. In this paper we will study three arabic translations of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez which has recently the focus of interest in Egypt. The aim of this paper is to discuss the reception of the translations of this novel in the light of Gerard Genette's well-known concept of paratext.  This study presents systematically the functions of the paratextual elements (preface or introduction and the footnote) they carry out. We will study how the use of these elements has an influence on the public, an influence that is at the service of a better reception for the text and a more pertinent reading of it.
