Abstract

This research aims at studying the forms of laughter in “The Montespan”, a novel of Jean Teulé who clarified the character of the Montespan who was the marquise who revolt against Louis XIV when he took his wife as a mistress. Doing this he dissents those who were in this era because everyone was keeping calm and accepting this shameful situation and is satisfied by obtaining benefits in counterpart of this great sacrifice.
Teulé has made of this real story an occasion to moke and to provoque laugher through this novel. In this research, we have chosen to enlighten the forms of laughter in this novel like absurd, laughter promoted by the naiveness of the characters, the derision, the heroicomic, the comic of situations and the words comic. We adopted the theories of Pierre Schontjes, Philippe Hamon, Jean-Marc Moura, Robert Escarpit and used the term “Laughter” as a general expression then we went from it to classification. Thus, it became clear to us that Teulé used the laughter as an instrument to denigrate and to criticize the morality in this era.
