The relationship between eternal love and holy foolery in the novel «Laurel» (2012) by the writer Evgeny Vodolazkin

Abstract

The novel is about a person who lives in the Middle Ages and works as a herbalist. This person causes the death of his beloved one, so he decides to dedicate the rest of his life to her and to help people, to do good, and to give the reward of all this to her soul. This study aims to shed light on the topic: the relationship between eternal love and holy foolery in the novel "Laurel" by Yevgeny Vodolazkin. To achieve this goal, the researcher relied on descriptive, analytical, and critical methods. Summing up, the paper reached the following conclusions: 1- Yevgeny Vodolazkin specialized in old Russian literature. and that is why he wrote the novel "Laurel ", which tells about a man who lived in the Middle Ages. 2- The love in the novel “Laurel” is distinguished from others not only by eternity, but also by the fact that it was the reason for Arseny’s transformation into a holy fool. We can say that the eternal love in the novel is not only Arseny’s love for Ostina but his love for God. 3- Vodolazkin used some rhetorical methods such as metaphor, simile, adjective, and others to increase the beauty of the text.
