This research examines the rhetoric of two jesters: “Triboulet” the jester in The King Amuses Himself of Hugo and “Fantasio”, the jester in Musset’s comedy. The jester's speech should therefore be perceived as an instrument of amusement. As a paradoxical and extravagant being, the jester can allow himself the rudest and most insolent forms of speech, under the pretext of simulated or real madness, provided that he avoids offense. We will therefore assess if the two jesters of the corpus are committed to this principle of non-offense.
