Mystery fiction is among popular literary genres that have continued fascinating and engaging readers since the early 19th century. From the very first mystery novels, the genre has evolved, enriching itself with details and styles that led, over the decades, to the formation of real subgenres. The world of mystery fiction owes much of its success to female authors who make significant contributions creating an individual way of writing crime/mystery/detective novels. The aim of this study is to shed light on Mystery Romance as an increasingly popular subgenre that combines the excitement and intrigue of a mystery with the passion and emotion of a romance. The study focuses on L’ora di punta. Un’indagine al volante, a novel by Italian author Nora Venturini as a perfect example of this subgenre in which suspense, mystery and romance combined, create a captivating experience keeping readers engaged in the story. Furthermore, as Mystery fiction is largely associated with the city, the relationship between the city and mystery novels will be examined, with a discussion of urban space’s significance for contemporary crime narratives.
