Abstract

Considering Antonio Gramsci’s approach to the study of history both conceptually and methodologically, the current study is interested in approaching Anna Messina’s Cronache del Nilo as a possible source of collection of the “partial material” that contributes to the overall depiction of history. To achieve such an objective, the current article dedicates a good portion of the study to the discussion of questions related to the intersection between Literature and History before discussing Messina’s poetics as revealed in her stories which focus on her desire to “describe” but also to “comment”. With this approach, the paper finally analyzes the representation of some characters in two short stories as an example, to collect the “small voices” of the “subaltern” groups of the community of Alexandria during early twentieth century Egypt. Listening to the voices and experiences emerging from the margins of History as described in this work reveals the inevitable intersection between disciplines dealing with culture, literature included, and histories.
