In various cultures, the old human habit of making comparisons has developed to intensify characteristics of things or people with expressions that, over time and due to frequency of use, have acquired fixation becoming phraseological units of stereotyped comparisons with expressive intensity. Undoubtedly, there may be discrepancies or coincidences between the points of reference and the constituent elements of these structures in different cultures. This paper studies these fixed stereotyped comparative expressions in Spanish and Arabic, to highlight the parallels and differences between them in both languages from a descriptive point of view in terms of their structure at the morphosyntactic and semantic levels, shedding light on their relationship with their referential and cultural universe, through a contrastive study, given the importance of such studies in many areas like learning foreign languages and translation. The study has reached some points of convergence and difference between both languages in this regard.
