Signs of psychological disorder in the novel Netochka Nezvanova (1849) by F. Dostoevsky

Abstract

The aim of this research is to shed light on very important theme: Signs of psychological disorder in the characters of the novel Netochka Nezvanova (1849) by F. Dostoevsky. To achieve this goal, this paper will rely on critical-literary, psychological and descriptive-analytical methods. Summing up, the paper reached the following conclusions; first, the heroine of the novel, Netochka, suffers from the Electra complex, which is an attachment complex, since she loved her stepfather more than her mother herself. Second, it turned out that the reason for Netochka’s Electra complex was the death of her father, so she tried to compensate for the loss of her father with her stepfather. Third, Dostoevsky used several methods of psychologism, including description of the environment, facial expressions, body movement, dialogue and monologue. Fourth, Dostoevsky in the novel used several means of expression, such as comparison, rhetorical exclamation, repetition, metaphor, rhetorical question and epithet.
