Abstract

Aspect is one of the important topics in the linguistic research field, and is also a common feature of verbs in Chinese and Arabic. Aspect indicates what stage an action has reached and what state it is in within a certain period of time. It is mainly divided into two types, perfective aspect and imperfective aspect. The perfective aspect only observes the beginning and end of the action; the imperfective aspect observes the continuation or the progress of the action. This paper aims to compare the expression systems of Chinese and Arabic perfective aspect and explore the similarities and differences between the two languages. This paper finds that because Chinese is an isolating language and Arabic is an inflectional language, the expression forms of the perfective aspect in Chinese and Arabic are completely different.
