Abstract

This research aims to study the use of place in Mustafa El-Dabba’s short story collection Room 201 from a structuralist perspective, where place is considered a pivotal element and a main component in the structure of narrative texts, sometimes rising to the level of being an active character in the events.
The research examines how the author was able to employ place with its realistic and symbolic nature, and how the vocabulary related to place dominated his narrative language, forming an interconnected lexical field with other elements.
Among the findings of the research are:
- Place has a special magic that fascinated the author; this made vocabulary related to place a dominant element in the text and its paratexts.
- The distinctiveness of the place and its connection to characters and events made it a prominent component with special features; this lent realism and beauty to the short story collection.
