Abstract

This paper critically examines 〈City of Stars〉, directed by Lee Jang-ho, to explore the complex themes of urbanization and the commercialization of women in 1970s Korean society. Drawing from a popular novel, the film highlights significant social issues arising from the rapid post-industrial urbanization. During this transformative period, the genre of hostess films flourished as the film industry sought to recapture audiences that had been lost to foreign cinema and the growing influence of television. This study delves into the film's portrayal of women, highlighting the intricate ways in which these representations are woven into broader socio-economic narratives. Additionally, it addresses the film’s divergence from its original literary counterpart, paying close attention to the impact of censorship and the urban policies prevalent at the time. Ultimately, the paper contends that the film transcends mere entertainment and serves as a critical reflection of the socio-political landscape in Korea during the 1970s.
