Literature is one of the most intrinsic and meaningful expressions of human culture. Managing to capture the essence of their times, writers consistently succeed in reflecting and analyzing social reality while offering insights and criticism contributing to social change.
The aim of this comparative study is to shed light on the theme of agricultural seasonality in two novels: In risaia by Italian writer Marchesa Colombi and Al-Haram by Egyptian novelist Yusuf Idris clarifying the historical contexts in which they are set and how literary writing becomes an important occasion for social denunciation.
Both Authors use their narratives to reveal problems such as poverty, racism and the miserable conditions of seasonal workers criticizing social injustices and inequalities in Piedmont's rice paddies and in cotton plantations in Egypt's Nile Delta. The study reveals also how anthropology and literature interact in both novels emphasizing many facets of traditions and superstition in peasants’ life.
