Teaching grammar at the level of 1 st year in Algerian middle schools, a comparison between the first and the second generation

Abstract

There are and have been a lot of voices in modern times, complaining about the difficulty of teaching grammar; they criticize its relevance and impact in the teaching of the pupils. The present paper tries to find answers to the following questions: How do educators and experts see the problem? What is the best way to teach grammar? What is the methodology followed in our schools in teaching first-year pupils of intermediate education? Do the methodologies in the first & second generations agree or disagree?  And finally, which one is more effective for the pupils?
